Rand McNally is the most recognized name in modern maps and cartography. Founded in 1856 by William Rand, the print business grow, to the point where it oversaw the print of the Chicago Tribune. Rand McNally primary business though, was printing railroad tickets and schedules. In 1869, the company began to supplement the schedules with complete railroad guides.
The printers became of the the most distinctive printing businesses because of the tools they employed; instead of printing with traditional plates, the company used new, cost efficient wax plates.
