The first edition of the Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia was released in 1889. Edited by William Dwight Whitney, the enormous tomes held more than 10,000 woodblock illustrations. It wasn’t until 1897, a year after Whitney’s death, that Benjamin Smith added an atlas to the encyclopedia featuring over 100 color lithographs.
